Will The Sound Fade Out? (the current title for the documentary) is the first proper production I have worked on since March 2020 but it still presents some very clear similarities and differences to how shoots at university have worked on in the past but many aspects required much more thought and consideration this time around. Following on from my previous post, we are now more heavily on the production side of the first part of the film with the hope that we will have a finished version in the next few weeks before moving on to the second film in late April/early May.
As the cinematographer, my role has been heavily involved in finding suitable archive footage that can be used to fill in the gaps between the first three interviews. Now that the practice interviews have been completed, this moves onto the next step: what answers were given in the interview that we feel would be best suited for the documentary and the message we hope to send? Knowing what answers will be given lessens the challenges coming with finding the right footage due to the fact the documentary will be covering a range of music styles and work including MC.
The crew have their own individual tasks to complete to make sure the film is completed to our personal deadlines but many aspects that we have to complete are very similar to how our normal university shoots function i.e. risk assessments for our contributors who are filming themselves with the biggest difference being no in-person filming of any kind. I was nervous to begin with as to how we would be able to make this work but communication between the crew made it easier to understand and these nerves were lessened once we had confirmed contributors and a clear plan for the next few weeks after the first interviews.
