Finding The Right Footage

One of the tasks I had to take on as the cinematographer was finding all the footage that could be used to fill in the gaps between the interviews which did present a few challenges when it came to finding what would fit with the themes of the film. The first step of this process was through going through the script and the overall goal was to make sure whatever I found matched what was being said by the voiceover and that nothing I included could be seen as unnecessary or irrelevant to the film.

Whilst archive footage wouldn't be taking up too much of the film's 15 minutes run time, it quickly became clear that it would important to have spare footage if there were any gaps left. I made sure not to restrict myself with how long each of the clips would be meaning the footage ranged from DJ deck footage from YouTube to old hour-long sets from some of our contributors.

Here's an example of the type of footage that is being used alongside our main interviews:

The style of the first part of the documentary has a slower pace than what we are planning for part 2 as the main message that we want to give out to the audience is the impact COVID-19 has had on the music creators alongside their opinions on the government's actions whilst not overwhelming them with fast editing and irrelevant footage. The next stage of the project is repeating the same process for part 2 by using the script as a guide to what the audience should see with a more positive look at what is now happening with COVID-19 and the potential for parts to re-open in the future.
