Having not done any on campus practical work for the course since March due to COVID-19, it was nice to finally get back into testing new equipment which we recently did with the Sony FS5s. These cameras are clearly lighter and more compact than what we used in 2nd year - the Panasonic 371's - and these workshops were also our first chance to test out fully 4K cameras as well. Our first workshop had us testing out how different light intensities can change a shot whilst using a standard 3-point lighting setup but this time with more choices as to what type of light to use for each.
This first workshop was our best chance to both get familiar with the lighting setups again as well as testing out the new cameras which really helped us prepare for we were offered the following week. The most recent workshop had us testing the jibs which allowed for much smoother camera movements than either tripods or shoulder rests which led to lots of different styles of experimentation, shown below:
The most recent workshop was definitely one of the most interesting ones I've ha so far as it gave me a better chance to look at some of the equipment we can potentially use as well as helping me figure out what areas of cinematography I still hope to develop in future workshops.
