Feelings/Real Voices Shoot

Updated: Jan 6, 2019

PSC 1 (Feelings) was the first proper shoot we had aside from the smaller test shoots we'd done in Tom's craft sessions and was more of a simple one to give everyone a sense of how everything worked ranging from paperwork to editing. The goal of the shoot was to convey a specific emotion (ours being anxiety) in the space of around 1 to 2 minutes with the narrative being a university student nervous with starting their first day.

Going Through Footage

My role for this was the camera operator as I wanted to understand how the new cameras worked as I only used DLSR's throughout college and whilst having some of the same settings like ISO and white balance but needed to learn others like N/D filters and how they link together to make a shot look its best. The production side of this shoot went very well, it was the editing side where we ran into the first couple of problems mainly relating to time and the fact we were still trying to understand how Avid worked as a software.

Unaware to us at the time, the format set in Avid for editing was't at the correct high-definition setting, it was rather set to standard definition meaning we were still able to edit to the footage but exporting it wasn't possible. This led to me having to export the work on my personal laptop and chose to upload a separate document explaining the problems we experienced. This gave us many ideas and guidelines as to what to do in the following shoots and to always check that everything is on the correct settings.

PSC 2: Where to even begin with this one? This shoot ran into multiple unexpected problems on the day of filming, everything in terms of planning up until the actual shoot. the shoot mainly involved an interview with a tattoo artist talking about the industry as a whole and there was a chance that we would be able to film in the convention that he was going to on the same day. This originally only gave us about two hours to complete the interview which we thought was more than enough time. The problems started when our contributor unexpectedly left for the convention much earlier than we had anticipated, leaving us with nothing to film.

Filming With No Clue As To What We Were Actually Filming

After a quick phone call to our coordinator, we decided on a new idea: why don't we make a film about how hard it really is to make films? Once we had got back to campus, we started writing up a new plan and tried to figure out whether we could use one of the TV studios as a new filming area. Luckily, we were able to get permission and eventually filmed an interview with one of Gemma's (our 2nd year mentor) friends who talked about the problems and highlights she experienced during her first year of university.

The whole crew worked incredibly well to create a whole new film in the space of only a few hours and we all plan to work on communication to make sure there are no problems like this in the future. I really hope there won't be.
